Organization Profile
The history of the IIT system traces back to 1946, when a committee led by Hon’ble Sir Jogendra Singh was formed to consider the establishment of higher technical institutions for India’s post-war industrial development.
A 22-member committee headed by Sri N.R. Sarkar recommended creating four higher technical institutions across the country, modeled on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA. This vision eventually led to the foundation of IITs, with IIT Kharagpur being one of the pioneers in this prestigious system.
